Why spring is critical
Spring in the Hunter region is when pest populations explode. Termite colonies release winged reproductives (alates) to establish new colonies, ant trails appear in kitchens within days of the first warm spell, and spider webs seem to appear overnight. Acting in early spring — before these populations peak — is far more effective and affordable than treating an established infestation in summer.
Outdoor checklist
- 1Clear gutters and downpipes of leaf litter — damp, decomposing material attracts termites and cockroaches
- 2Move firewood at least 5 metres from the house and elevate it off the ground
- 3Check weep holes in brick veneer walls are clear of soil and vegetation
- 4Trim branches and shrubs so they don't touch the exterior walls or roof
- 5Remove any timber-on-ground contact — old stumps, sleepers, formwork left in the garden
- 6Check for and remove any standing water — pot plant saucers, blocked drains, birdbaths
- 7Inspect the subfloor for moisture, drainage issues or stored timber
- 8Check external taps and irrigation for leaks that create damp soil near foundations
Indoor checklist
- 1Check roof void for signs of rodents — droppings, gnawed wiring, nesting material
- 2Inspect under sinks and behind appliances for cockroach activity — droppings, egg cases, musty smell
- 3Seal gaps around pipes, skirting boards and window frames with silicone sealant
- 4Check flyscreens for tears and repair them before fly season peaks
- 5Clean pantry and cupboards — crumb build-up attracts ants and cockroaches
- 6Check for signs of termite activity — mud tubes, hollow-sounding timber, bubbling paint
Book a spring treatment
A spring general pest treatment from $165 creates a protective barrier against ants, spiders, cockroaches and other crawling insects for months. If you haven't had a termite inspection in the last 12 months, spring is the ideal time — termite activity is visible and conditions are right for detection.
Bundling a termite inspection with your general pest treatment saves you money — inspections are $240 when bundled for a single storey home (from $195 for a unit or townhouse), compared to $295 standalone.
