Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a structured, risk-based approach to pest control that prioritises prevention, monitoring and targeted treatment over routine chemical application. Rather than spraying on a schedule regardless of activity, IPM uses monitoring data to determine when and where treatment is needed — reducing chemical use, improving effectiveness and producing the documentation that auditors and compliance officers expect. For Newcastle food businesses, healthcare facilities, aged care and schools, IPM is increasingly the expected standard.
IPM is built on five core pillars. Step one is a comprehensive site inspection and pest risk assessment — mapping the facility, identifying entry points and harbourage areas, assessing current activity and documenting conducive conditions. This assessment forms the baseline against which all future monitoring and treatment is measured.
Step two is monitoring program design. Instead of relying on sightings, monitoring devices — rodent stations, insect traps, pheromone traps and fly control units — detect pest activity early, often before it becomes a problem. Every device should be numbered, mapped and inspected at a defined frequency, with data feeding into trend analysis.
Step three is prevention through exclusion and sanitation. This is the most cost-effective strategy: sealing doors and windows, sealing pipe penetrations, managing waste, maintaining drains, and keeping storage off-floor and rotated. Step four is targeted treatment — when monitoring indicates activity above an agreed threshold, treatment is specific to the pest, location and activity level, prioritising the lowest-risk effective method. Step five is documentation and continuous improvement — every inspection, treatment and corrective action is recorded and reviewed at least annually to improve the program.
Universal Pest Control implements IPM programs for commercial facilities across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter. Our structured approach — risk assessment, monitoring, prevention, targeted treatment and audit-ready documentation — reduces chemical use, improves effectiveness and produces the compliance evidence your business needs.
