German cockroaches are one of the most difficult household pests to eliminate. They breed faster than any other common cockroach, hide deep inside appliances and are notoriously resistant to DIY treatment. Let's clear up some common misconceptions.
Myth 1: 'I can just spray them.' Reality: Surface spraying alone rarely works. German cockroaches hide behind fridge seals, inside dishwashers and in switchboards. Professional gel baits placed precisely in harbourage zones are far more effective.
Myth 2: 'If I see one, there's only one.' Reality: German cockroaches are nocturnal. A single daytime sighting often signals a much larger hidden population — potentially hundreds or thousands.
Myth 3: 'Fly spray will sort it out.' Reality: Fly spray can actually make things worse by repelling cockroaches away from baits and deeper into harbourage areas. Never use fly spray before a professional treatment.
Myth 4: 'A clean kitchen means no cockroaches.' Reality: German cockroaches can survive on tiny amounts of food — grease behind the stove, crumbs in drawer hinges. Cleanliness helps but won't eliminate an established infestation.
Myth 5: 'One treatment is enough.' Reality: Active German cockroach infestations almost always require a follow-up treatment 2–4 weeks later to interrupt the breeding cycle and address eggs that survived the first treatment.
